In part 1 you built a repeatable routine for natural skin: value plan, undertone reading, five part palette, markers, then pencils. This guide points that same routine at characters who are not human, and walks you through one fantasy character from concept to finished glow.
The trap to avoid before we start: fantasy skin is not natural skin with the hue slider dragged sideways. Blue skin colored like peach skin just looks like a painted human. What sells an alien, a fae or a chrome android is a believable material, and materials are described by value structure, chroma placement and reflection behavior. So the rule from part 1 still runs the show, value first, hue second, chroma third. We are only changing what goes into each slot.
Fantasy anatomy, what changes and what never does
Good news: everything you learned about the planes of the face in part 1 still applies here. A fae, a demon and a grey alien are all still a skull with a surface over it, and light still hits the forehead first and dies under the jaw. What changes is which landmarks get exaggerated, and exaggerating them is exactly what sells the species.
- Fae and elves: higher, sharper cheekbones and a narrower jaw. The cheek plane becomes a long triangle, so your shadow shape under it is longer and thinner than on a human face. Ears are thin skin, so they glow, give them a warm pass of RV000 even on a cool green character.
- Horned and demonic: a heavier brow ridge and a wider jaw. Deeper eye socket shadow, harder turn at the temple. Horns are keratin, not skin, so they get their own value ramp and a harder highlight, E49 or PC947 into a crisp light edge.
- Aliens: an enlarged cranium changes where the light lands. The top of the skull becomes the brightest plane and the tiny nose means almost no cast shadow in the center of the face, which is a big part of why they look uncanny.
- Metallic and chrome: anatomy matters more, not less. Reflections snap along plane changes, so if your cheekbone edge is vague the metal looks like grey paint.
One rule to keep you honest: exaggerate the bone, keep the light logic. If the forehead is the brightest plane on a human, it is the brightest plane on your alien too, whatever hue you pour into it.
Step 1, cast your six color roles
Natural skin needed five slots. Fantasy skin needs six, because you are inventing a material as well as a person. Fill each of these in before you touch a marker.

When you fill those in, resist giving every hue equal billing. Pick one dominant hue, one structural shadow hue, one internal accent and one environmental neutral. Even a triadic scheme works better when the three hues differ in area and chroma: one dominates, one supports, one is concentrated exactly where you want the viewer to look. Once the roles are cast, you can give them actual colors.
Step 2, choose a concept palette
These four concepts each fill the roles from step 1 in a different way. Pick the closest one to your character and adapt.

Look at what these rows have in common: the shadow is never just a darker base, and the internal accent always sits opposite the base on the wheel. That is the engine of the whole guide. Step 3, translate the palette into markers and pencils

You do not need every code in a row, two or three is plenty. What you do need is the handling, because each material behaves differently on paper. The next four sections take the four big ones in turn, and you only need to read the one you are drawing.
Step 4a, alien skin
Decide what is under the skin before anything else, because it settles every later choice. If the internal fluid is magenta, then thin tissue, blush zones and backlit edges shift magenta. Copper based blood argues for turquoise internal accents. Invent the biology freely, then stay consistent across ears, lips, eyelids and scars.
From there, work exactly as in part 1: block the value hierarchy in grayscale, lay a pale blue base while reserving the strongest highlights, then push the shadow toward blue violet rather than a darker cyan. That last move is usually the whole difference between "person in body paint" and "not from here".
Step 4b, fae skin
Green skin becomes believable the moment you invite muted yellow, gray violet and warm living accents into it. Uniform bright green reads as plastic. Put yellow green in the lit planes, greyed lavender in the form shadows, and rose or peach in lips, ears, knuckles and eyelids. That last touch is the same vascular observation you made in part 1, simply transplanted onto a green base, and the complement lowers chroma while keeping the color interesting.
Step 4c, metallic skin
Metal breaks the soft transition habit you built on natural skin, so adjust deliberately. Metal is a reflection pattern, not a gray gradient: it shows compressed, abrupt jumps between bright and dark reflected bands. Reserve white paper streaks on the planes facing the strongest source, place a dark gray immediately beside selected bright bands, and soften only some transitions. Then add sky blue from above, warm brown from the ground and a little costume color nearby. For living metal, keep the softer subsurface transitions around lips and eyelids so the viewer reads a hybrid material rather than a statue.
Step 4d, bioluminescent skin
A glow has to emit light, not simply be a bright color, and that is a value problem before it is a hue problem. Keep the emitter the highest value area, darken and desaturate the surroundings so it has room to shine, and carry a halo of that light onto nearby cheeks, jaw, collarbone and costume. In practice:
- Reserve white paper for the brightest core.
- Ring it with BG10 without crossing into the reserve.
- Add BG13 and G00 farther out.
- Build the body with BV17, BV29 or B39.
- Deepen the far side of the form, never the area touching the glow.
- Once dry, glaze Light Aqua and Chartreuse pencil outward from the emitter.
- Keep the core edge crisp and soften only the halo. A uniformly blurred green patch looks like fog.
Step 5, check your character against the usual suspects
Whichever material you drew, run this list before you call it finished. Each fix points back to a step above.

- Keep the same value structure you would use on natural skin and only swap the hues. For blue skin, B00, B02 and B05 with BV23 shadows read as living skin, while a flat blue fill over a peach value plan always looks like paint.

- Start from a pale natural base such as E000 or E00, then tint with a whisper of BG000, BV000 or G00. The trick is restraint, fae skin is natural skin with a cool cast, not a green character.

- Metal is about reflection bands, not glitter. Use a wide value range from C0 to C8 or E0000 to E49, with hard edged light and dark stripes and almost no soft gradients. Silver pencil alone just gives you gray skin.

- Darken everything around the glow. Emitted light only looks bright by comparison, so a bright hue plus a dark surround plus a little colored bounce on nearby surfaces sells it, a neon fill on white paper does not.
